Dr Steven Kings

Dr Steven Kings has been Conductor of Thornbury Choral Society since 2005.  He is also the Music Director of Monmouth Choral Society. Between 2001 and 2014 he was Assistant Director of the BBC National Chorus of Wales, working regularly alongside Adrian Partington and acting as chorus master in concerts and recordings with many leading conductors including Thierry Fischer and the late Richard Hickox. He himself conducted the chorus in performances at St David’s Hall and the Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff, and at the Queen Elizabeth Hall in London. Steven is also the Assistant Music Director of the Bristol Choral Society, whom he has conducted in a number of performances including their tour of Hungary in 2003 and the opening night of the Bristol Harbourside Festival in 2006. From 1999 to 2004 he was conductor of the Cotswold Chorus, and in 2008-09 he conducted the Bristol University Singers.

As a piano soloist, accompanist and chamber musician Steven plays regularly in venues around the region. He has given solo and concerto performances at Bristol Cathedral and the Colston Hall, worked as a duo partner with violinist Roger Huckle and in chamber music with the Emerald Ensemble (now the Bristol Ensemble). He is in constant demand as an accompanist to vocal soloists, instrumentalists, and choirs. He has also achieved success as a composer and his music has been heard in many places including Bristol, London, and Tokyo. Steven was educated at the King’s School, Worcester, and studied music at Cambridge University and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. In London during the 1980s he was a founder member of the New Chamber Players, with whom he performed new British music (including his own) all over the country. He also taught piano at the Royal Ballet School, and nowadays teaches at Clifton College in Bristol, as well as maintaining a private teaching practice for students of all ages and abilities.
